Be Assured: We are Adopted

When we are struggling, our inner voices can lead us down unhelpful paths of thinking. They can tell us negative things that are not true or exaggerate the truth. Looking at the promises that God has given us can remind us of the truth and to start a journey towards changing our inner voices to stop looking inwards, and to look toward Jesus. The promise we're looking at today is the promise of ADOPTION.

The promise we’re looking at today is the promise of ADOPTION.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Galations 4:4

I used to say to my daughter, “Jesus died on the cross, so we can be friends with God”. This hugely undervalues and under-appreciates God’s promise to us. We are more than friends. If we believe and trust in Christ as our King and Saviour, we are God’s children and co-heirs with Christ!

So what does it mean to be adopted into God’s family?

Unconditional love from our heavenly Father

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

1 John 3:1a

This means that there is no sin too big or bad for Jesus to cover, no breakdown too messy for God to turn away from you, and no difficulty too small that God won’t care for you.

Perfect care from our heavenly Father

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him

Matthew 7:9-11

Our heavenly Father, who knows us perfectly, provides us with all we need and much more.

No more separation from God

We get to spend eternity with the almighty God as our heavenly Father. While we are still on this earth, we have the amazing gift of the Holy Spirit within us to be with us, guide us, and remind us of God’s promises.

In the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Acts 2:17

No more separation from people

Part of being loved by the Lord and belonging to Him in His family is being together with Him. We are also adopted as brothers and sisters to each other.

Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.

Hebrews 2:11

God doesn’t send us all literal angels every time we need a helping hand, as Elijah received in 1Kings 19. However, he has given us a world full of brothers and sisters. We have this amazing community through the church, where we can love and serve one another, whilst also being loved and served.

So when you’re next feeling low, lacking in self-esteem or feeling lonely and isolated, remember that you are a dearly loved child of the Lord most high. God specifically chose you to be part of His family. And God knows what He’s doing. He never makes mistakes. If you trust Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, you have been welcomed into His incredible family.
