Bad depression days can make everything feel impossible, right down to that first step of getting up in the morning (or afternoon?!). So here are some suggestions that might aid the internal battle:

Remember you are not alone

God is with you in this and in every trial. Remember that He will be with you in every part of today.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

Pray

Pray for the strength to get up and face the day. Pray about anything you’re particularly worried about. Pray about how great our God is.

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

Use physical reminders

Place a postcard of a Bible verse or a prayer next to your bed, so it is the first thing you see in the morning. Use it to reframe your mind and set you up for the day.

Reward yourself

Give yourself something to look forward to. Whether it’s a cuppa tea, a hug with your pet or reading a chapter of your book. Having something positive to look forward to will make getting out of bed easier.

Self-reflection

Why do you struggle to get out of bed? The answer may just be ‘depression’. However, there may be other factors feeding into it, such as worry or fear of an event. Understanding the root causes of your outward symptoms can help to produce a long-term improvement.

Sunrise alarm

If one of the things you reflect on is SAD (seasonal-affective disorder) symptoms, a sunrise alarm may help you wake up slowly and more naturally.

Take one step at a time

Getting up, getting ready and getting on with your day may feel too big. But can you sit up? Put your feet on the ground? Stand up? Ta dah! You’re up. Don’t worry about all the other tasks, just focus on the very next thing, believe you can manage that little thing… and do it!

Alarm clock placement

Leave your alarm clock on the opposite side of the room and, if possible, set it to a really loud and annoying. That should help you get up!

Physical help

If all else fails, if you don’t live on your own, ask someone to literally haul you out of bed!

Tell a friend

Friends are amazing. They can sympathise with you, call you to make sure you’re not spending all day in bed, give you advice and generally be a big help and encouragement.

Speak to a professional

Your GP, therapist, minister etc may be able to give you tailored advice and point you towards further advice.

Ponder

Do you believe that Christians should be joyful?

What would it look like, if you were more joyful?

Pray

Lord God, thank you that we can be in your presence because of Jesus. Thank you that you have given us your Holy Spirit. Please help us to recognise your presence and to rejoice in You.

Amen
